Fire and photos: the Alte Feuerwache project space in Friedrichshain

Watch out, it's hot: the Alte Feuerwache (Old Fire Station) project space is an important platform for artists from Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and a venue for a wide variety of exhibitions.

Located on Marchlewskistraße, not far from Ostbahnhof, the building’s past as a fire engine hall is clearly visible in the square first floor room: its high ceilings, arched windows, beautiful columns and brick walls are witnesses of the time. Its use by the fire department ended in 1955 - but things are still hot there. The Alte Feuerwache, built in 1884, is now a cultural center including a youth room, studio stage and integration projects for refugees - and its project space is an exciting place for contemporary art.

Spread over 145 square meters, works by Berlin artists are shown in changing exhibitions with priority given to those from the local area. One example is the exhibition series "von mir aus" which takes place every March for International Women's Day. It most recently featured the artist Angelika Arendt, whose drawings and sculptures deal with growth processes. From visual to multimedia art and exhibitions on socio-cultural themes, the place has everything.

Photography plays a special role: the Alte Feuerwache takes part in the European Month of Photography (EMOP) and regularly cooperates with Photocentrum am Wassertor at Volkshochschule Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The various exhibitions are accompanied by guided tours, talks, workshops, readings, concerts, film screenings, lectures and performances. So there's plenty to discover.
